GTR ONlINE

Today was the first broadcast for my new show DUB be good to you on GTR online. The show go’s on air every Tuesday 10pm  to 12 midnight bkk time. Cool thing is I am able to  broadcast live  from my apartment so I can smoke weed and do my show at the same time, the downside is that unfortunately the internet connection at my place  is a bit fucked up. I’m going to have it sorted out soon I hope. The internet radio station is the brainchild of DJ Seed. The station plans to have show’s from all of  Bangkok’s underground music movers and shakers. So far peeps such as Tul(apartment Khun pa), Nolens Volens, Sound element crew and Thaitanium have confirmed that they will be hosting shows on this channel. I think by may the station will have its own website and also have a better time table, but for now its just operating out of the Uradio website. I’m glad to have been the second DJ to have a show on this station because I’ve been friends with Seed for a very long time. We ‘ve worked together on numerous occasions, the first time  I worked for him was back in 97 and since then Seed has been an influential figure in the Thai underground music scene . He used to be the editor of Generation Terrorist magazine,  and also in the past he has master minded many huge outdoor events such as Moto Mashup. I have a deep respect for P’Seed(brother Seed) and I’m deeply honored to have been given a chance to get back on the radio.  Since resigning from my show on 104.5 fat radio, I always regret that I never got another chance to get back on air. There are alot more things you can express through radio that you can’t express while mixing. As far as the show is concerned I’m playing all things dubwise. Everything from hip hop, techno, dnb, house and of course raggae and dubstep are all gonna be rinsed on my show. I’m really going to work hard on this project and hopefully I ‘ll make P ‘ Seed proud. I’ll post up more things regarding this in the following weeks. Anyways here’s the link to the station.

Culture One

Posted in events, random thought on January 26, 2009 by dragon

This saturday (January 31) is the date for Culture One 2009. Considered to be one of Thailand biggest dance music events, the rave caters to  all musical tastes. Expect to hear Everything from House, Techno, breaks, electro, indy rock and even some dub step. The four main stages will be Culture arena, Amnesia Ibiza arena, Titan arena and last but not least the legendary Dude Sweet arena. Headlining acts for the event are Sister Bliss, Ken Ishii, Moguai, and  Ac slater. Last years 2008 event had 8000 ravers turn up but unfortunately the Police forced  the organizers to shut the event early at 12 midnight. Which was kinda good as the headline DJ for the 08 gig set consisted of numerous  cheesy house tunes. So I was kinda glad the shut that one early. As for this year the rumor is that this years main stage will be indoors so hopefully the closing time will be 4 am. But most likely I think they will closing sometime around 2 am, which by law is the closing time for all nightspots in Bangkok city. Besides from the rumor of a late closing time, there were also mentions of having Sven Vath, Andy C and Simian Mobile Disco playing at the event. I guess they all cost a shit load of money so no one bothered to book them anymore. oh well next time I guess.  I’m also excited to hear the local DJ’s warm up the set for the headline dj’s. Djs I want to check out are Galactic Soul, Sound Element, Nannue Tiptier, Suharit, and the Diet Pills. I was also invited to play, I am looking forward to being the first dub step DJ to play at this event. So being the first also means playing first, so the organisers want me to get on stage around 4 pm. Yes I know its a very early as some people aren’t even awake at that time but oh well what can you do! On the other hand I am very excited to hear some of my favourite dub step tunes on there huge sound system. Its always a rarely that you get a chance to hear your favourite records being played very loud where you can feel the bass pulsating through your body. The one tune I think is going to cause a small earthquake is Skream’s Rottan on Tempa records and, I can’t wait to hear how that will sound on the big soundsystem.

Most of all  I hope there will a good vibe and a great turnout this weekend. I’ll have more things posted up about the rave after this weekend..lets hope that everything goes well. Just Click on the link in the bottom if you want ot have a look at the flyer

2008/2009

Last year was   a bit of a slow year regarding work and money. Even though we had many successful parties at DJ Yas, Dubway, Monopoly, The Pier, Motorola Mash up with slot machine and even at the Legendary Breaks club in Silom 2/1 -I still feel that many things went by very slowly in the first 7 month of 2008. Its because so many of the gigs didn’t come regularly and, most of them were one off’’s. Things eventually got going in early October. Funny thing is the minute my leg was broken that’s when I started to get so many offers for gigs. I kept my cast as a good luck charm but I don’t think I would ever want to go through have anymore broken bones in my body. I do hope that this year I spend less time watching youtube and get more time trying to make beats. I don’t think I will ever make any beats that would get signed but I do think it would be good for me to discipline myself and get to work. Besides that, I definitely need to spend a lot more time practicing mixing and scratching this year. I still put in a good 2-3 days a week practicing but I think i should do a bit more this time. Also the podcast show needs to be updated more often because its one of the few things that is there to actualy help me express whats going on in my head and, its important because it also helps educate thai kids who are interested in dub step and dnb. Another very simple goal is to also put out a mix cd sometime this year. I’ve been putting that off for ages now but I think it about time that I get one done. These are some of the things that I definitely want to focus on this year. Just a few simple things but I think if done properly then everything should be cool.

stutters,slurs and dub step

Posted in events, random thought on July 1, 2008 by dragon

I have just been interviewed for a online TV show called Awaken. The show’s host Michelle Segrave is a popular celebrity/TV presenter in Thailand. Known for her cool fashion sense and cute onscreen personae Michelle is a favorite among Thai youth. Her latest show was first aired on channel Five TV, but due to showbiz politics the program has been temporarily taken off air. For the time being they are broadcasting via there website www.awakensite.com the show covers everything from music, fashion and lifestyle.

The Awaken show’s producers have just finished filming an interview in Australia with Thai electronic music producer Joni Anwar. The crew got to hang out with Joni at a Dub step party in Sydney. When they returned to Bangkok the producers wanted a more have another interview with a more in depth talk about dub step. The show’s producers were interested in interviewing me as they heard that I was spinning dub step at my parties. So I saw this as a good opportunity to promote the music and also promote my events. When I was filming the interview I was asked to speak Thai. Unfortunately speaking “proper” Thai is something that I completely have a hard time doing. When ever someone shoves a camera in front of my face that’s when the stutters and the slurs begin. First there’s the question, next thing I have to think about what to answer, then translate it in my head, and finally try to speak clearly enough so that everyone understand. It’s Easy in theory but a pain in the ass in practice. Even as I am writing this I ‘m still having a hard time to put my thoughts into words.

One of the things I love about dub step is that it like drum n bass it has taken bass music a step foreward. Listening to a new dub step track now reminds me of hearing jungle drum n bass for the first time back in the early 90’s. Every time I hear a new dub step tune I can always feel the progression in the music. It is like watching a planet being born. Unlike the music that dub step scene came from, that being UK garage, the sound in dub step is less pretentious. Furthermore because of the half beat and the slower tempo gives the bass a very sinister feel. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying dnb has lost its appeal. Regardless of any genre a dope tune is a dope tune. Even so a lot of people are hating on dub step at the moment. Some people say that its too slow or that it ripped off a lot of the bass lines from dnb. I disagree completely. In my opinion modern underground music’s like dnb and uk garage are all re incarnations of dub reggae, and the music has been evolving since the early days of King Tubby. Since then these vibes eventually became to what we know now as jungle, uk garage and dub step.

Back in high school I had friends who thought drum n bass was cool but never really could understand why it was so fast. Most of my friends had never been to raves and also had never taken any drugs. So the chattery breaks of jungle drum n bass seemed alien to them. In some ways when people hear dub step for the first time, the vibe and feel of the music is something they can relate to since some beat patterns resemble more of a hip hop or grime feel. Don’t get me wrong I don’t think just because the beats in dub step are slower that it makes a better alternative to dnb. The beats in dub step are just as complex as dnb, but the only difference is that they are a lot less frantic and,  because of the slower tempo it puts a bit more emphasis on bass rather then break therefore giving  the low end frequencies a chance to shine.

Shouts to all the crew at awaken for the interview and shouts to DJ Conloy sorry bro I forget things when I am nervous.

nothing lasts forever

Posted in random thought on June 3, 2007 by dragon

Music has been so important in my life since I was a young lad. Ive always had music with me everywhere I went, for example waking up for elementary school and taking the bus to school I ‘d always have my walkmen on blasting def leopard, guns n roses and what ever 80s heavy metal band that were popular at the time. I remember getting decks for the first time and going down to the record store and seeing all these racks and racks of vynil for sale. I can remember all the songs on the mix tapes that I mixed for my friends, all the hip hop tunes like nuthing but g thang, jump around, insane in the brain. Having music and being imersed in music has always made me feel better about things as im sure it is like that for others people as well. Apart from listening and spinning music I ve always been a big collector of vynil. Everything from to old school hard core rave, deep house , breaks , drum n bass and especially hip hop. I spent all of my lunch money on these records and I was planning on being buried or cremated with them. I mean there not the best records or most popular tunes but i loved them to death. Unfortunately nothing lasts forever and neither did some of the tunes in my collection. This is because termites can eat through anything even vynil ( well the covers anyways). I wanted to sample some hip hop loops so I went back to my moms house ( thats where I keep my records). So I went searching through the oldschool section and as I searched through the stacks of vynil I have found that a colonie of termites had made there home in my old school hip hop collection all living and workin there. They first started to eat the wood on the shelves then made there way towards the vynil. They didnt eat the actual vynil but what they did was eat the covers and labels then build a nest on the vynil. So when thats done they record looks like its been dragged in mud. Gone were dr dre, sugarhill gang, mantronik, stetsasonic, and the song that I remember hearing for the first time and almost driving me to tears because it reminded my of a friend who had passed away in high school, the song by Ed og and the bulldogs named love comes and gos were reduced nothing but piles of dirt and will never ever be played again. The buddha gotama taught that nothing lasts forever and I suppose thats true. I m not really concerened about any of my other posessions but these records were what inspired me to be a dj.  Each record reminds me of a stage in my life as there were alot of good times, heart ache and confusion . Those records are gone and will  never be heard and enjoyed from anyone else again.
